Leiden has a tremendous history the first tulip bulb was brought here four hundred years ago and has now become a symbol of the Netherlands. But in the early years a tulip craze emerged as the Dutch fought tooth and nail to buy and sell the bulbs for huge profits, the age of commerce had arrived! Leiden’s other main claim to fame is the refuge given to European Protestants who were forced to flee their own countries. The most famous are the Pilgrim Fathers who lived in Leiden before sailing to America. Continue reading →

Not only has this 900-year-old town an historic centre full of beautiful medieval houses, a 13th-century city hall and the oldest museum of the Netherlands, the Teylers Museum of science technology and Dutch art, but it is also at the heart of the bulb growing region through the dunes to Leiden. If that’s not enough to satisfy your appetite, you can continue with the Nieuwe Kerk, the Frans Hals Museum (Dutch Masters) and the St. Bavo. Not only has Haarlem itself lots to offer, it also makes a great stop on your way to Zandvoort the beach resort closest to Amsterdam.

Haarlem was once a powerful and prosperous city in the 17th century and you can see the splendid houses from this period. It is in easy reach of Amsterdam about 20 minutes by train and a little further is the beach at Zandvoort. Continue reading →
